What are the Five Elements, and why does their balance matter in Saju?

One-line answer

The Five Elements (五行) are the five energies of Wood (木), Fire (火), Earth (土), Metal (金) and Water (水), and every one of the eight characters in a Saju chart belongs to one of them. Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, Earth generates Metal, Metal generates Water and Water generates Wood: that is the generating cycle. Wood overcomes Earth, Earth overcomes Water, Water overcomes Fire, Fire overcomes Metal and Metal overcomes Wood: that is the overcoming cycle. The elements in excess and the elements missing from your chart show up in your personality, health and the way you spend money.

How do you memorize the generating and overcoming cycles?

Memorize the generating cycle as the order of nature. Burn wood (Wood) and you get fire (Fire); when the fire burns out it leaves ash (Earth); metal (Metal) comes out of the earth; water (Water) beads on the surface of metal; and water grows trees. Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood.

The overcoming cycle skips one step each time. Tree roots break through soil (Wood overcomes Earth), soil dams water (Earth overcomes Water), water puts out fire (Water overcomes Fire), fire melts metal (Fire overcomes Metal), and metal cuts wood (Metal overcomes Wood). Overcoming is not a bad thing; it means 'to govern', and in Saju both wealth (what I overcome) and career (what overcomes me) come from overcoming relationships.

What happens when an element is in excess or missing?

Four or more of one element among the eight characters is read as 'excess', and none at all as 'deficiency'. Excess Wood brings stubbornness and too many projects started; excess Fire brings haste and words that run ahead; excess Earth brings rigidity and reluctance to change; excess Metal brings sharpness and strict personal standards; excess Water brings overthinking and slow execution. A missing element marks the area where you are clumsy at what that energy represents, or learn it late.

Simply counting elements, though, is a beginner's method. The Month Branch (the season) carries three to four times the weight of other characters, and counting the hidden stems inside the branches changes the result. Sajunyang calculates the element distribution with hidden stems and seasonal weighting included.

How are the complementary element and lucky colors determined?

If the Day Master is weak, the complementary element is the one that produces it (Resource) or shares its element (Companion); if the Day Master is strong, the complementary element is on the side that drains its strength, the Output, Wealth or Officer stars. This is called the Useful God (用神). Lucky colors, directions and numbers are chosen to correspond to this complementary element. Wood is green, east, 3 and 8; Fire is red, south, 2 and 7; Earth is yellow, center, 5 and 0; Metal is white, west, 4 and 9; Water is black, north, 1 and 6.

FAQ

Is a chart with all five elements evenly present a good chart?
It is balanced and steady, but that is not the same as 'good'. A chart where one element is strongly concentrated sometimes achieves more in a specific field.
Can a missing element be filled with a name or the color of your clothes?
That is the traditional advice, but there is no way to verify the effect. It is best used as a reference for setting the direction of your daily habits.
