The upper character, the Day Master, is you yourself, and the lower character, the Day Branch, represents the person you keep closest (your spouse) along with your inner self and daily habits. Because of the sexagenary cycle there are 60 Day Pillars, from the Gapja Day Pillar to the Gyehae Day Pillar, and the same Day Pillar returns every 60 days.

Why is the Day Branch the spouse palace?

Among the four pillars of a chart, the Day Pillar is the pillar of 'me'. If the upper character of that pillar is me, then the lower character supporting me in the same pillar is read as the being closest to my body, namely the spouse (or the closest person I live with). Depending on which of the Ten Gods sits in the Day Branch, you read whether the spouse is someone who helps you (Resource stars), someone you look after (Wealth or Output stars), or someone who controls you (Officer stars).
